Created in 1965 as an independent federal agency, the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) supports learning in history, literature, philosophy and other areas of the humanities. NEH grants enrich classroom learning, create and preserve knowledge and bring ideas to life through public television, radio, new technologies, exhibitions and programs in libraries, museums and other community places. Established in 1876, the American Library Association (ALA) is the oldest and largest library association in the world. Through its Public Programs Office, ALA promotes cultural and community programming as an essential part of library service in all types and sizes of libraries. Successful library programming initiatives have included Let's Talk About It reading and discussion series, traveling exhibitions, film discussion programs, the Great Stories CLUB, LIVE @ your library, and more. Recently, the ALA Public Programs Office developed Programming Librarian, an online resource center bringing librarians timely and valuable information to support them in the creation of high-quality cultural programs for their communities. The Illinois Humanities Council is an educational organization dedicated to fostering a culture in which the humanities are a vital part of the lives of individuals and communities. Through its programs and grants, the IHC promotes greater understanding of, appreciation for, and involvement in the humanities by all Illinoisans, regardless of their economic resources, cultural background, or geographic location.
Founded in 1961, WETA is the leading public broadcasting station in the nation's capital, serving Virginia, Maryland and the District of Columbia with educational, cultural, news and public affairs programs and services. WETA's mission is to produce and broadcast programs of intellectual integrity and cultural merit that recognize viewers' and listeners' intelligence, curiosity and interest in the world around them.
